Insurance has its own myths and misconceptions: the important thing is to make sure they don't become expensive mistakes. Here are five of the most-common.

1. Many of us consider insurance is about injury or death.

Insurance is about life - about having the cover you need to pursue your passions and dreams, whether they relate to work or your personal life, secure in the knowledge that you and those who depend on you won't be out of pocket if the unexpected happens.
If you have this view, you’ll feel better and be ready to consider and fix your other insurance mistakes.

2. “I don’t need insurance, and they never pay out anyway.”

You do need insurance, and whether or not any particular insurance company has a history of paying out claims is a matter of research.

If you are ambivalent about insurance, here two things you can do: consider the minimal cover you need to protect the thing most-precious to you, then research your target insurance companies’ payout records. Google, and social media, make this easy.

3. Insurance is for home only.

Not so: insurance can be for anything, in fact. (Imalia, for example, will soon have policies to cover everything from legal costs to your nanny or au pair.) And insurance is not only for activities that have inherent risk or danger.

If you’re in business, are a non-profit or commercial board director, or have people in your main home regularly (be they nannies or carers), consider having appropriate insurance.

4. “I have to take responsibility for my own actions.”

Well, yes you do, and thank you for being so responsible. Being responsible for your own actions includes having appropriate cover, especially in business, but also to cover, for example, legal costs.

That you’ve read this far probably means you’re already reaching for your mouse or smartphone: good decision!

5. “I don’t know where to start, so I’ll do nothing.”

Perhaps this is the biggest insurance mistake of all: through fear, confusion or inertia, you simply do nothing.

Maybe this will help: imagine losing everything. Imagine losing some or all of what’s most precious to you - your home, your car, your business, even your reputation.

Now imagine having the financial means to replace what’s been lost, or to rebuild your life, on your terms.

Imagine that you’ve researched the pros and cons of any number of insurance options, you’ve made a decision to go with an insurance provider that meets your needs.

Imagine you’ve taken out cover you can afford that meets those needs.
